With a polyhedron of genres, a high-wire stunt guitar, soaring vocals, pounding back beat rhythms, monday night stalwarts of the Atlanta's Northside Tavern STAMPEDE! delivers goods. Fronted by Atlanta's premier songwriter / singer / guitarist, Johnny McGowan, this trio can take on any song at any time. Pulling tunes from the blues vaults Freddy King and Johnny Guitar Watson, digging up classic instrumentals from Ennio Morricone "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and Dick Dale's Pulp Fiction theme "Miserlou" all the way to AM Gold heyday of Dave Dudley "Six Days on the Road" and Jerry Reed's "Amos Moses" just to name portion of the broad scope of this group's depth of knowledge. A real treat for any listener is Johnny's original tunes. Crossing every genre known to man, songs run from the truck driver themes of "Man Behind the Woman Behind the Man Behind the Wheel" to the northern soul sounding melody "I know I'm that Strong" reminiscent of Sam Cooke continuing the journey to middle Europe three penny opera "Kiss of Fire" to south of the border 60's go-go of "Theme from Grinder Nova" to Blue Cheer-esque rock and roll of "Up My Sleeve." Johnny is always ready for original song requests. Try one and listen for yourself. Couples are prone to jump right into the dance floor at any moment, I have seen 100 dollar bills drop into the tip jar, and cheers after solo breaks. On every Monday night he introduces the band and states, "We have a band name, and that band name is?," to which the entire club emphatically acclaims, "STAMPEDE!". |
